What is a T-bone Accident?

A “T-bone” accident is a motor vehicle collision, involving two (2) cars, motorcycles or trucks, and generally occurs when the front of one car, motorcycle or truck strikes or collides with the side of another car, motorcycle or truck. At the moment of impact these two (2) motor vehicles form what looks like a “T” (as depicted in the diagram below) and the impact is called a T-bone accident and is sometimes described by the accident victim as, “I was ‘T-boned’ by a car that ran a red light”.

If you were a victim of a T-bone injury accident or a family member tragically killed with a wrongful death accident claim, please call us now at 866 INJURY 2 or 818.222.3400 (after hours, please press “1”) or simply click here to contact us now. Our T-bone accident consultation is absolutely FREE!

The damage to the cars and other vehicles involved in T-bone collisions can be severe, depending on the part of the car or other vehicle that is struck. The damage to the involved vehicles and the injuries to the occupants of these vehicles (that is, the drivers and any passengers) will vary by which part of the car or vehicle is struck (e.g., whether it’s the door, rear quarter panel, etc.), the strength and weight of the vehicle and its safety features (e.g., types and placement of its airbags, for the front occupants, side-impact airbags, etc.) and whether the driver and any passengers were properly using seat belt and shoulder strap restraining devices, and the speed of each vehicle.

In addition, another factor that can lead to greater property damage and injuries is that the greater the impact due to the above factors, then the higher the chance that one or both vehicles may spin around, rollover, and/or be pushed into some other car or truck or even a utility pole or other object. Any such forces and impacts are likely to increase the chance of the car’s driver and any passengers suffering more severe injuries, including head injury, concussion and fractures, and sometimes even a fatal injury accident with a wrongful death claim.

In fact, many car accident fatalities with wrongful death claims are caused by T-bone accidents. This is because in a broadside collision impact, there is very little separating and protecting the victim in the car hit from the side other than a door and glass. The usual and stronger reinforced framing may not be there, thereby subjecting the victim, especially when the at fault car or truck is speeding, to greater risk of injury, even death and a wrongful death accident claim.

Causes of T-bone Accident Collisions

There are many causes of T-bone accidents, which normally occur when the at-fault driver fails to yield the right of way to another vehicle which is crossing through an intersection at a 90 degree or perpendicular or right angle to it. Please see our diagram.

From our experience in handling many T-bone injury car accidents and motor vehicle collisions for over 45 years, we see several common causes of such T-bone car accidents, including the following:

  • Traveling too fast for conditions or speeding and then failing to obey the electronic traffic signals or stop signs for the subject intersection;
  • Not paying attention or using due care, often from using cell phones, including texting, or other electronic mobile devices while driving;
  • Entering an intersection when it is not safe, perhaps when the driver behind honked his or her horn when the traffic signal turned green but before the intersection was clear of other vehicles (Remember, the car unsafely entering an intersection bears responsibility, not the car located behind who honked and who most likely will disappear, so NEVER enter an intersection until it is 100% clear and safe to enter it);
  • The at fault car enters the intersection against a red traffic signal;
  • The at fault car enters the intersection without stopping for its stop sign;
  • The other car enters the intersection against a stop sign when it is not safe to do so;
  • The at fault car is speeding or traveling too fast for conditions and did not allow sufficient distance needed to stop prior to entering the intersection;
  • Poor visibility, for example, when a driver’s line of sight is blocked or obscured by a large truck, other vehicle, large bush or tree; and
  • Weather conditions, including a very bright setting sun temporary blinding the driver, rain, fog, or wet and icy roads.
Statistics for T-bone Accidents in California

According to the California Highway Patrol (chart 3G), in 2011 there were 2,813 broadside or T-bone accident collisions in California in 2011.

What Should I Do If I Was In A T-bone Accident Collision

There are a few basic things to do when involved in a T-bone car accident and for a more detailed comprehensive summary of what to do when T-boned please see our web article entitled “Car Accident Advice—What To Do If You Are Involved In A Car Accident In Los Angeles, The San Fernando Valley, Ventura or Anywhere in California”. Meanwhile, here is the short, concise list of things to do after being involved in a T-bone accident collision:

  • If anyone was injured in this T-bone accident or collision or any other emergency services are needed, immediately call 911 for help
  • If you are not at fault, call 911 for the police to come to prepare a Traffic Collision Report (police report) to confirm that you were not at fault. This should help you with your insurance company to keep your insurance rates from increasing and also help you with any claim you may want to make for property damage (including rental expense and diminution in value after repairs are made), hospital and other medical expense reimbursement, loss of wages and income, and for all your injuries, including for pain, suffering, inconvenience and loss of enjoyment of life activities.
  • Move to a safe area. If you are not at fault, try not to move the vehicles until after the police come and do their investigation. Be sure you stay in a safe area.
  • Exchange information, including all drivers’ license and insurance information, and all contact information
  • Photos – Take photos of the entire scene before the vehicles are moved, including the position of each vehicle and all traffic control devices, all property damage to all vehicles, the other party’s drivers’ license and insurance card, all vehicle license plates, etc.
  • If there are any favorable witnesses, get all of their contact information, including full name, phone numbers, addresses and email addresses.
  • Contact our personal injury and wrongful death lawyers for advice and a FREE case evaluation, and learn what forms should be filed with the DMV, including the SR 1 report, etc. Ask about what medical care is available to you without any payment required until your claim is resolved
  • Obtain necessary medical care, whether at a local hospital emergency room, urgent care center or via a doctor our law offices can help you find, often on a lien basis, which means no payment is due until your case is resolved
  • Do NOT admit fault to anyone. Even if you believe you were at fault, there may be facts you are not aware of, including speed of the other vehicle, color of the electronic traffic control light when the other vehicle entered the intersection, malfunction of a product, including brakes and steering control, etc.
Types of Injuries That Occur In T-bone Accident Collisions

Various injuries, some very serious, can result from T-Bone, roadside or side-impact accidents and collisions, including the following:

  • Chest injuries
  • Injuries to the spine, including to the victim’s neck and back
  • Injury to head, including concussion and headaches
  • Injuries to the victim’s lower extremities, including leg, knee, ankle and foot.
  • Injuries to abdomen and pelvis
  • Facial injuries, including TMJ injury to the victim’s jaw and cuts, lacerations and eventual scarring from broken glass striking the face of the driver or any passengers
  • Complex regional pain syndrome, commonly referred to as CRPS injury involving various parts of the victim’s body
  • Emotional and psychological injuries, including fear of driving
What is the Proper Medical Care and Treatment for T-bone Accident Injuries

While every case is different, from the type of accident collision (such as a violent T-bone collision compared to a more moderate rear end collision), the type of vehicles involved (from a small Honda to a heavy Cadillac or Mercedes or even a big truck), to the speed of each vehicle [the higher the speed and the greater the weight of the vehicle striking the side of another vehicle in a T-bone collision, then the greater its momentum (essentially weight or mass times speed) and the probability of greater damage to the vehicle and injury to the driver and any passengers], there is certain basic medical care that should be considered.

If there are serious injuries at the scene, then 911 should be called for emergency assistance. Paramedics should come to the scene to evaluate and render any needed emergency care; then any seriously injured parties should be taken by ambulance to the closest emergency room hospital providing care for the particular injuries involved. There are specially designated trauma hospitals for certain more serious injuries.

Medical examination with appropriate care and treatment should be received by anyone injured, even when not serious enough to warrant transport by ambulance to the local hospital emergency room.

When needed, more specialized care should be provided, such as examination and care by orthopedic surgeons, neurologists, neurosurgeons, psychologists, psychiatrists, dentists, physical therapists and massage therapists.

Specialized diagnostic equipment such as digital X-rays, Scans (MRI and CT Scans), ultrasound, EMG, and other devices should be utilized as appropriate to assist medical providers with diagnosis and treatment.

Certain procedures short of surgery, such as epidurals and other similar procedures, may be employed when deemed appropriate, both to help diagnose a problem and/or to try to treat it.

Further, appropriate medications should be offered, including for pain, muscle inflammation, muscle relaxants, etc.

Often injury victims do not know how to obtain appropriate care and our personal injury and wrongful death lawyers and legal team can assist, from finding and recommending appropriate doctors and other health care providers to often arranging care and treatment on a lien basis, which simply means payment for these medical and other health care services is not due until the injury accident case is resolved. Thus, victims can usually get needed health care without worrying about any payment, not even any co-pay or deductible!

In addition, if you do not have transportation to your doctor, physical therapist or other health care professional, our personal injury law firm can usually arrange transportation for you to get to your doctor then back to your home or work. If you need assistance with travel to your doctors, just let us know. We really want to help and try to make things as convenient and as easy as possible for you after you are the victim of a T-bone injury accident.
